How does SWC Academy work?At SWC Academy we offer 10 academic writing courses for 3rd through 12th grade. Our curriculum is grade appropriate to support elementary, middle school, and high school students. We use the latest research methodology to ensure students maximize their learning experience. Instead of spending the majority of class time on spelling tests, grammar worksheets, and other islolated sub-skills of writing, students will develop their writer's craft through a highly complex workshop format. We also offer five college readiness courses for our upper middle school and high school students.

What makes SWC Academy special?SWC Academy was designed by eight educators in the city of Rowland Heights and Diamond Bar. The curriculum was strategically designed using research based strategies to support students. Whether your child is a struggling writer or is naturally a great writer, we have all the right courses to fit your child’s needs.

Does SWC Academy only offer writing lessons?In order to develop advance writing skills, students must be exposed to a complete balanced literacy curriculum. For that reason, all of our courses will also include the following services in addition to writing lessons: 1. Critical thinking reading skills 2. Google grammar assessment 3. Enrichment vocabulary 4. Oral communication/Discussion 5. Digital media/Technology Literacy

Who will be my child's teacher?SWC Academy writing courses are taught by Mr. Mike You, Mrs. Inhee Kim, and Mr. Wally Wang. In some cases, other writing coaches will be available for private and group sessions. What type of assessments are provided at SWC Academy?At SWC Academy we provide several forms of assessment for our students: 1. Diagnostic pre-assessment to determine writing level 2. Does SWC Academy provide a progress report?Yes, we provide a weekly digital progress report to our parents. Our student reflection progress report will include: 1. Which course your child is taking 2. Learning objective and standards addressed 3. Classwork/Homework completion status 4. Classroom citizenship 5. Assessment results 6. Personal reflection 7. Writing coach comments

How much does SWC Academy cost?All of our tuition information is provided on our website. Our tuition rates will vary depending on the semester in addition to the number of students present in the class. Please click on Parent Information to get the full details.

Does SWC Academy offer make up classes?In the event a student can not make it to class, we do provide individualized support before and/or after class the following meeting to make up the lesson. It is expected that students come to class consistently to maximize their learning experience.

How is SWC Academy different from other centers?At SWC Academy, we offer a 10-course technology writing program that is very similar to a university setting. Each course is unique and focuses on key skills that will help students in the classroom and beyond. We use research based strategies that are aligned with 21st Century and Common Core State Standards. SWC Academy coaches use a systematic approach and will guide students as they explore their craft. Instead of spending the majority of class time on spelling tests, grammar worksheets, handwriting practice, and other isolated sub-skills of writing, students will develop their writer's craft through a highly complex workshop format.

How many courses should my child take?Becoming a great writer takes time, patience, and dedication. At SWC Academy we use a progressive method by allowing students to master one skill before moving onto the next. We have seen students excel after just taking one course. Ideally, we recommend students take a minimum of 3 courses to see a difference in his/her academic performance.

Which course should my child take?Depending on your child's grade level, it will vary. Our writing consultants will recommend the best course for your child's current level and the following years to come.

Can SWC Academy writing coach help out with my child's school work?SWC Writing coach will only teach the curriuculum that is provided by SWC Academy. The entire 1.5 hours will be dedicated to improving your child's writing skills. If you need a separate tutor for your child's homework needs, please inform Mr. Mike You. Thank you.

When can I enroll my child to take classes?We offer three semesters throughout the school year. Fall/Winter Semester is from August - February consisting of 24 lessons. Enrollment period is April 1 - July 27. Spring Semester is from March - May consisting of 10-12 lessons. Enrollment period is January 1 - February 15. Summer Semester(s) is available for June and/or July consisting of 12 lessons. Enrollment period is February 16 - May 15.

How long is each class session?Each class session is 1.5 hours of instruction.
